Election Film Makes the Enquirer

Stealing America is almost here. Ms. Fadiman has been touring the film throughout the country, but it is yet to land in the state that most needs it – the battleground state of Ohio.

The news of the film has however landed in the pages of the Enquirer. If we're lucky, a few people outside the small circle of politicos that aimlessly roam the blogosphere will catch wind of the film and have their curiosity tickled enough to make an appearance.

Get the word out. Election reform is still the most important issue – after all, the rest of the issues (the war, energy, taxes, etc.) are rather pointless without the people having a say in who makes the decisions.

STEALING AMERICA: Vote by Vote – A New Film

Film to be shown in Cincinnati:

On Monday September, 25th, at 7:30, the new documentary STEALING AMERICA: Vote by Vote, A Film by EMMY-winning filmmaker Dorothy Fadiman, will be shown at the Esquire Movie Theatre in Clifton.

This film brings together dramatic behind-the-scenes stories related to the election of November 2, 2004. The heart of the story is a candid assessment of ways in which privatized election systems, disenfranchisement of certain populations and vulnerable voting technology are impacting our democracy.

Honors for the Director’s media work include an ACADEMY AWARD nomination and the CPB Gold Medal (Best Short Documentary from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting).

Dorothy Fadiman will be available to discuss the film and answer questions following the screening.

WHAT:
A screening of the new film STEALING AMERICA: Vote by Vote

WHEN:
Date and time of the event: Monday, September 25th at 7:30.

WHERE:
Esquire Movie Theatre on Ludlow.

ADMISSION: $5

I hope everyone, from every area of the political spectrum, can make it out to see this crucially important film.

The Velvet Rope

Shaking hands, conversing, and listening to concerned citizens – What do these things all have in common?

They're all activities that City Council will not be doing with us commoners.

This reorganizing of chambers and the way business is done there is part of council's mission to beef up security after the death of Kabaka Oba on the steps of city hall. Ironically, while it was a citizen that was shot coming out the front door of a regular council meeting, all of the security measures being taken are measures that will make the members of council more safe while doing little for the actual citizens.

Appropriate for any swanky downtown nightclub and apparently any democracy, the VIPs will be separated from rest of us by a velvet rope. The rope, while not likely to stop bullets or deter an assassin, will keep us in our place – now we know we're not supposed to pester those people who we voted for and are too busy representing us to talk to us.

That's not the only security precaution being taken though.

From the Enquirer:

Bullet-resistant paneling has been installed on front of the long desk at which the mayor, council members, city administrators and clerks sit during city council meetings. Before the paneling was installed, a drape covered their bottom halves from the desk to the floor.

Even the Enquirer has a sense of humor about this as we can tell by reading their headline: Finally, Council's legs protected.

A bulletproof desk, perhaps stolen from Wayne Manor, must be there in case the velvet rope, powerful as it may be, fails to thwart the would-be assassin's plan.

As for democracy, just e-mail it. You may get a response in a few days.
